legitimate military targets, according to an investigation by The
Guardian released on 25 June.
The investigation is part of what is called the Gaza project, led by
the France-based Forbidden Stories NGO, which has analyzed the killing
of journalists in the Gaza Strip since the beginning of the Israeli
war in October.
The US-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) places the number
of journalists killed in Gaza since the start of the war at a minimum
of 103. According to CPJ, 30 percent worked for media outlets
affiliated with Hamas.
The Guardian investigation identified at least 23 dead journalists
employed by the largest Hamas-linked outlet, the Al-Aqsa media
network.
When asked about the number of journalists belonging to the Al-Aqsa
network who have been killed, a senior Israeli army spokesman said
there is no difference between working for the outlet and being a
member of Hamas armed wing, the Qassam Brigades.
Adil Haque, professor of law at the US Rutgers University, said, Its
a shocking statement
a complete misunderstanding or just a willful
disregard for international law.
The Al-Aqsa networks offices have been bombed by Israeli jets during
previous assaults on Gaza.
In 2019, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu signed an order
using broad legal powers to designate the network, which is also under
US sanctions, as a terrorist organization. The designation was made
under domestic Israeli law, which legal experts said was not a blank
cheque to kill journalists affiliated with the network.
Sources cited by The Guardian say Al-Aqsas offices were evacuated at
the start of the current war in Gaza due to the belief that they would
be targeted.
One Israeli source said there has been a permissive approach to
targeting across the army when it came to the war.
Another source familiar with legal advice given to the Israeli army
said journalists affiliated with Hamas exist within a grey zone and
that there is a problematic view in the military that whenever
theres someone getting a salary ultimately from Hamas, they become
legitimized as a target.
According to the CPJ, over 75 percent of all journalists who died in
the year 2023 were killed by the Israeli military in Gaza.
Many of these journalists have had nothing to do with Hamas. Hamza
Dahdouh, son of renowned Al Jazeera bureau chief Wael Dahdouh, was
killed in an Israeli airstrike on the Gaza Strip on 7 January.
Dahdouh was killed alongside another journalist, Mustafa Thuraya, as
they were reporting on the damage caused by an Israeli airstrike on a
residential area between the southern cities of Khan Yunis and Rafah.
Several journalists have also been killed in southern Lebanon while
covering Israeli bombardment there since the beginning of the war.

For more than two decades, the U.S. position has been that al Qaeda acted
alone on 11 SEPTEMBER, but a newly public video has raised questions about
whether the Saudi government provided crucial assistance to the hijackers
during the 9/11 terror attacks.
Omar al-Bayoumi, whom the FBI says was an operative of the Saudi
intelligence service with close ties to two of the 9/11 hijackers, can be
heard on the video, which was unsealed in federal court this week and
obtained by 60 Minutes. The 1999 video was taken within 90 days of the time
when senior al Qaeda planners were deciding on 9/11 targets, Richard
Lambert, a retired FBI agent who led the initial 9/11 investigation in San
Diego, said.
"It is another very large brick in a massive wall of evidence that at this
point indicates the Saudi government was complicit in the 9/11 attacks,"
Lambert said.

Bayoumi filmed the video over the course of several days. It shows
entrances and exits of the U.S. Capitol along with security posts and a
model of the building. At one point, he points out the Washington Monument
and says he'll go there and "report to you in detail what is there." He
also notes the airport is nearby.
Lambert, who's now a consultant on the case filed by the families of 9/11
victims to hold Saudi Arabia responsible in the Sept. 11 attacks, said
knowledge of where the Washington Monument is in relation to other D.C.
landmarks could help guide people toward intended targets.
British police found the video during a raid on Bayoumi's U.K. apartment in
the days after 9/11. They also seized Bayoumi's hand-written address book
that the lawyers for the 9/11 families say was filled with phone numbers of
numerous senior Saudi officials who were in the government at the time.
When Bayoumi recorded the Washington video, he was often with two Saudi
diplomats who the FBI says had "ties to al Qaeda," a finding the Saudi
government disputes.
Retired FBI agent Ken Williams led the 9/11 investigation in Phoenix, where
one of the hijackers attended flight school. He believes the Bayoumi video
"ranks right at the top of the pile" of evidence. Williams strongly
disagrees with the Saudi government's stance that the video was one Bayoumi
took as a tourist.
The British police are believed to have turned over the video to the FBI
shortly after 9/11, which raises the question: why, after more than 20
years, is it just now surfacing?
"If that was missed then shame on us for missing it," Williams, who is also
a consultant on the case filed by the 9/11 families, said. "If it wasn't
missed, then I would have to ask the question: What was done with it?"
The Saudi government and Bayoumi deny any involvement in the 9/11 attacks
and lawyers for the government have filed a motion to dismiss the case.

Tawaf, derived from the Arabic verb “Taafa,” means “to encircle”. In the
Islamic context, Tawaf involves walking around the Holy Kaaba seven times
in an anti-clockwise direction. Pilgrims start from Hajr-al-Aswad (the
Black Stone) and complete this ritual during Umrah or Hajj. The Kaaba, a
cube-shaped structure in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, is the most sacred spot for
Muslims worldwide. They orient themselves toward it during daily prayers,
bury their dead facing its meridian, and aspire to visit it on pilgrimage.
The Kaaba’s interior contains three pillars supporting the roof and
suspended silver and gold lamps. The Black Stone (al-Ḥajar al-Aswad) is
located in its eastern corner. Legend holds that this stone, originally
white, turned black by absorbing the sins of countless pilgrims who touched
and kissed it. Every Muslim performing Hajj or Umrah is required to walk
around the Kaaba counterclockwise seven times, and while doing so, touching
or kissing the Black Stone is encouraged but not mandatory."
